Cavities typically occur in textured areas of tooth enamel that has been compromised by long-term poor oral hygiene practices. If you further choose not to have the ailing tooth treated by a professional dentist like Dr. Mark Hughen the area of tooth decay will start to compromise an increasing amount of available dental structure.

This could cause a toothache, severe tooth sensitivity, a periodontal infection, or a severe dental fracture. Sometimes a tooth in this state is so badly compromised that Dr. Hughen can’t viably treat it with a root canal. Should this prove to be the case, he might recommend a total dental extraction.

After your gums have fully healed, Dr. Hughen might recommend replacing the tooth with a dental bridge. This type of dental restoration consists of installing one solid piece of dental work that replicates the appearance and function of the original tooth. It is fused to a pair of crowns on each end.

To effectively anchor the dental bridge in your mouth Dr. Hughen will need to create a pair of abutments. This is done by removing the entire tooth enamel layer from each of the surrounding teeth. Your dental bridge will need to be created in a professional dental lab. When it’s ready it will be cemented into your mouth with a strong dental adhesive.
